Le Rayol Canadel

Cultural visits

Rayol Canadel is not a town but a botanical garden with more than 80% of the town consisting of gardens composed with 400 plant species from all around the world.

An incredible and unique collection in southern France. The Pergola of Patek and its monumental staircase, are also registered in the inventory of Historical Monuments since 1989. Originally this staircase built between 1925 and 1927 was going up to the Flag rock (150m) on which flew the French emblem. Built of
micaschists stones extracted from rayol careers. These stairs allowed residents to access the beach when roads and cars were not built. Today, there are only the Central Staircase and "les degrés de la mer" that enable to access the beaches.

In summer, introductions to the hiking "marine" trail and musical evenings are programmed in the illuminated gardens. The scenery from the Flag Rock is still impressive with enchanting views of the islands of Hyères.
